Quick Tips for Type 1 Diabetes

Installment #4

What follows is a quick and dirty list of my top of mind quick tips.

  1. Glargine (Lantus) and Detemir (Levemir) are also called basal insulins.

  2. Lispro (Humalog), aspart (Novolog) and glulisine (Apidra) are also called bolus insulins.

  3. Adults with diabetes should try to keep their hemoglobin A1C level under 7% and ideally below 6.5%.

  4. Blood pressure of adults with diabetes should ideally be under 115/75.

  5. Persons with diabetes should have their lipid levels checked yearly.

  6. The target LDL-Cholesterol level (aka ‘bad cholesterol’) for diabetics should be under 100 mg/dl.

  7. Persons with type 1 diabetes have a higher risk of developing thyroid problems and should be checked by their physician.

  8. Celiac disease is more common in persons with type 1 diabetes and should be checked by their physician in the presence of symptoms.

  9. Epilepsy is four times more common in children with type 1 diabetes.

  10. Lower hemoglobin A1C levels are associated with a lower risk of diabetes complications.
