June / July 2018 Newsletter for Dynamic Diabetes Management Inc.
May and June Sugar Surfing™ print books sold: 423, which includes 51 books purchased via the Sugar Surfing website and shipped by us. Besides many sent to US addresses, we shipped books internationally to Canada, Australia, Italy, Ireland and Bermuda!
Purchase of eBooks and complementary eBooks to the newly diagnosed (within 90 days from book request) are being downloaded worldwide. There were 75 e-books downloaded. Of those 75, we donated 48 free e-books to persons newly diagnosed in May and June!
If you choose to purchase the Sugar Surfing paperback, please purchase from the Sugar Surfing website rather than from Amazon. The reason is straightforward. DDM loses $11.00 with each book sold through Amazon for seller fees, and Amazon does not ship our book outside the US. You can purchase the book from the website storefront at www.sugarsurfing.com , and we highly encourage this. When the print book is purchased from the Sugar Surfing website (and not Amazon), DDM makes more income which is able to be invested in the exciting projects described below. We can ship books directly to you from Texas and we can ship worldwide. Orders from the website also include a free Sugar Surfing bookmark!
Our webmaster Chris Hopkins has made some changes that we think you will like. Sugar Surfing Workshop dates and now easier to find. He has created feedback forms for Workshops that allow us to know what you thought. Please feel free to send us your comments!
JUNE SUGAR SURFING WORKSHOPS
We had two very successful Sugar Surfing Workshops in June. Both were well attended events that were also lots of fun! We always meet the nicest people and make new friends at the Workshops. We also love to see the attendees make new friends with other T1D families! A huge thank you goes out to the local volunteer organizers for these events; we could not present these Workshops without you!
The Des Moines, Iowa Workshop was held at Unity Point Hospital on June 2nd with over 115 attendees. It was a great group of people. Many drove several hours to attend! We can’t say enough nice things about Antoinette Garwood and Jessica Gerhart and their families as the organizers of this event. They did a fantastic job and everything went as planned. It was so nice to hear from attendees that they used the Sugar Surfing principles immediately with positive results. Now that’s a win!
The East Texas Workshop was held on June 23rd at Pine Tree Church of Christ in Longview, Texas in partnership with Longview Type One Foundation. Amber Hobbs and her family, as well as several of the LTO members worked very hard to make this Workshop a reality. There were only six weeks from the opening of registration to the event, and we had 85 attendees! We also had our first two-speaker Workshop; Cassie Moffitt, MSN, RN, CDE spoke about “Alternate Caregiver Education” as an opening to the Sugar Surfing Workshop. We hope to do more “double-header” Workshops in the future; this format was a hit! We were also able to gather some very needed diabetes supplies to be distributed by LTO to those in need in the East Texas area.
We also want to recognize our sponsors for these Workshops. We could not travel to these locations and put on these Workshops without their financial support. These companies are also present at the Workshops to provide valuable information to the attendees on new diabetes related products and technology. The Sponsors in Des Moines were: Unity Point Hospital (Venue), Insulet, Dexcom, Tandem, Diabetes Supply Center of the Midlands, Diabetic Equipment and Supplies, Mannkind, and Medtronic. The Sponsors in Longview were Tandem, Dexcom, and Ashley Bagwell/The Sugar Patch.
Registration is active and the lists are growing daily for DC/Baltimore, MD (August 18th), Portland, OR (September 8th), Atlanta, GA (October 6th), and Orange County, CA (October 13). Each location has a team leader driving local awareness and support. We are partnering with T1D MOD Squad on a Workshop in Jacksonville, FL scheduled for Nov 2nd. Registration for Jacksonville will be up and running soon.
We are now actively setting up Workshops for 2019. We have finalized a Workshop in Detroit, MI for May 4th. It may need to have a “Star Wars” theme! We are currently working out details for a Salt Lake City, NV Workshop as well. Many venues have been suggested. Some are still under active consideration. These include Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Central Illinois, and Charlotte, NC. We have also recently met two very active CDN members and are discussing a College Diabetes Network Sugar Surfing Workshop/Weekend in Austin, TX on February 2019 for CDN members in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. More to come on that!
Every Sugar Surfing Workshop requires careful planning, lots of time and plenty of energy to organize. We appreciate the passion that a local event host organizer brings to the table. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with inquiries about hosting a workshop anywhere.
PROFESSIONAL SUGAR SURFING PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Ponder’s 2018 AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year duties include more professional diabetes educator seminars between now and the end of the year. He will be in Baltimore for the AADE National Meeting in August, AADE California (Orange county) in October and AADE Kentucky (Louisville) in November.
As we have mentioned before, we are looking toward a translation of Sugar Surfing into Spanish, our Sugar Surfing University Courseware project, and an update of the Book into Version 2. Many of the Sugar Surfing concepts have evolved and new ones have been created since the book was printed, and technology is always advancing!

Book sales and workshop fees help us break even or become slightly positive with funds, but the projects outlined about will go nowhere without a source of funding. Grant writing will begin in a few months, but much is already happening now.
