Quick Tips for Type 1 Diabetes

What follows is a quick and dirty list of my top of mind quick tips.

  1. During any illness, check blood sugars more often.

  2. The dawn phenomenon is high morning blood sugars caused by overnight growth hormone.

  3. Most persons with type 1 diabetes will have over 5000 episodes of low blood sugar in a lifetime.

  4. The three macronutrients in our diet are carbohydrates, fats and protein.

  5. A meal plan for a person with diabetes should be individualized to their unique needs.

  6. A scheduled meal or snack should not be withheld for a high blood sugar.

  7. A scheduled insulin dose should not be permanently withheld for a low blood sugar.

  8. Only rapid acting insulin can be used in an insulin pump.

  9. The average insulin pump user is programmed with 3 to 4 basal rates.

  10. Insulin need is lowest during the middle of the night.
